Living It Out: a survival guide for lesbian, gay and bisexual Christians and their friends, families and churches'

Lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people and the church… it's a well-worn topic, there have been numerous polemic and theological contributions to this heated debate.

So, why would a book be of interest to those of us who have made up our minds and moved on?

Like many young lesbian, gay or bisexual Christians, Leigh-Anne felt that she faced a difficult choice. She reasoned that she couldn't be a lesbian and a Christian. 'One thing I knew, I didn't choose to be gay (like no one chooses to be straight) but I could choose to be a Christian,' she explains. 'If what I heard from the majority of the church was right, it left me no choice but to give up my relationship with God.' But this wasn't an easy choice. 'This wasn't something I wanted to do; indeed I felt a loss, like my church and faith had been snatched away from me.

'I was greatly frustrated,' she remembers. 'All I heard was the debate as to whether or not I could be a Christian. I was left in limbo! But realising that I hadn't got anywhere in five years made me realise that the church's view was never going to be unified in my lifetime. I couldn't wait that long.

'To this day I am frustrated that I let the opinion of others define my relationship with God, especially as most, if not all, didn't even realise the impact it would have on my Christian faith.'

As this experience shows, lesbian, gay and bisexual people can still experience significant challenges within the church. Once, like Leigh-Anne, you have moved beyond the issue of whether is it okay to be LGB and Christian, many more interesting questions remain. What to do if you're a Christian parent who wants to affirm and support your child whose just come out, or an LGB person figuring out how to make sense of the conflicting messages you hear from Christian leaders, or a minister who's been approached by a same-sex couple asking for a relationship blessing, or someone wondering how to introduce your same-sex partner to their church congregation, or a Christian trying to explain to your non-Christian friends why the church is so hung up about LGB people?

Leigh-Anne and more than 50 other people share their experiences, insights, and wisdom in Living it Out. We've woven their stories into an honest, upbeat narrative incorporating readings, prayers, cartoons and top tips. Our contributors range from 16-77 years old, lay and ordained, covering more than eight different denominations.

We took care not just to speak to LGB people, but to straight families, ministers and friends. The church's attitude to sexuality and sexual orientation, and how LGB people are seen within the church, is just as much an issue for non-LGB people, as it is fundamental to justice, inclusion and above all the way in which we reflect the unconditional love of God to all.
